Understanding Geolocation and Its Uses

June 23, 2015 by Serge Soroka

Discussing Location-Specific Data

Geolocation technologies include a range of solutions targeted at using a consumer’s location-specific data to influence behaviors. For the retail industry, this means sending accurately timed messages to individuals in the area. In other industries, this process can deter theft or even help optimize the efficiency of your remote desktop application.

GPS-enabled technology allows remote support apps, advertisers, intelligence agencies, and others to access information about the location of an activated device. The media often warns mobile device users of the dangers of enabling geolocation technology on a phone or tablet, because doing so can alert potential thieves or hackers to a target’s location. However, this technology can also provide vital support or even track a stolen GPS-enabled device. It’s a double-edged sword; it can be helpful or harmful depending on the context.

For the retail market, however, geolocation can provide vital information. Consumers can now receive location specific alerts and coupons to enrich the shopping experience with completely personalized marketing. Weather application companies, meanwhile, use the information to send out real time hazardous weather event alerts.

As IT support tools enter the mobile device environment, look for geolocation to play a part in this technology too. The technology can facilitate the assignment of local help desk support professionals and ensure better customer service, for instance. Meanwhile, as security features become more robust the likelihood of geolocation use for illegal activity will decline, allowing the technology to become an integral part of our increasingly interconnected world.
