With Microsoft continuing to aggressively push Windows 10 update at its users, many of them remain persistent, doing everything they can to postpone migration until the time is right. Why is it worth upgrading to the latest version when Windows 7 provides me with all the stuff I need to get the job done?
Well, that’s a good question. But let’s be realistic about this one: it’s no longer the question of “why”, but “when”. Windows 10 is actively grabbing its market share, and it will continue to do so. According to one of the latest company releases, the new OS is now on 300 million active devices. On top of that, there’s not much time left to upgrade for free, as the offer stands until July 29.
To upgrade or not to upgrade? Let’s go through some of the pros and cons for migrating to Windows 10 that might help you make the decision on time.
Cons
- More privacy concerns. Indeed, Windows 10 collects far more information from users’ devices that any of its predecessors. Many of its newly introduced feedback sending features can be easily disabled, some of them not.
- Forced updates. Well, no one likes to be left without a choice. In Windows 10, all updates come in automatically, and even if they’re far from being useful – you’re just not in a position to choose.
- New user interface. This means that after all these happy years you will have to learn how to navigate and interact with the new system. Some conservative thinking IT pros may find this quite irritating, as it equals more time spent on re-learning.
- You’ll miss legacy programs. Plain and simple: Microsoft has replaced them with new universal apps, which might be also hard to get used to.
- Bugs and compatibility issues. This can partly be true. For sure, it’s quite common to experience crashes and issues with the new operating systems, however, the older ones are not free of bugs, too. Moreover, the older versions lose the developer’s support over years.
Pros
- Greater speed. As soon as you migrate from an older version to Windows 10, you’ll immediately find that the system boots up and works faster. That’s what new versions are created for in the first place – speed.
- Better compression. According to Microsoft, Windows 10 leverages an efficient algorithm to compress system files. This means that you can save on your precious disk space in exchange for more required CPU power. Isn’t it a dream feature?
- Microsoft Edge. Start joking about Internet Explorer in the past tense. Microsoft Edge is faster, full of useful features, and less buggy.
- Universal apps. Okay, you might be missing legacy programs, but Windows 10 comes with a far more comprehensive suite of business and productivity apps that can be used across multiple devices. Furthermore, you can download practically anything from thousand of apps available in the Windows Store.
- Virtual desktops. Apple has had this one for years, and it’s a handy one. You can conveniently navigate between multiple virtual desktops on your screen without any hassle.
Bottom line, Microsoft will continue to polish up Windows 10, and with all the pros and cons mentioned above, it might be easier for you to see the benefits more clearly. Or vice versa.
